Anxious Attachment
Anxious attachment is an attachment style characterized by a deep fear of abandonment, low self-esteem, and a constant need for validation and closeness in relationships. People with this style are highly sensitive to their partner's emotional shifts and often misinterpret distance as a threat to the relationship. They crave deep connection yet are persistently worried about being rejected, abandoned, or unlovable.
How this shows up in relationships:
becoming preoccupied with whether your partner is losing interest
overthinking texts, conversations, or changes in communication or your partner’s tone
feeling anxious when your partner about pulls away
seeking reassurance, but find that the relief does not last
pursuing connection when you feel your partner becoming distant
overgiving or abandoning your own needs to maintain closeness and connection
struggling to trust that your partner genuinely cares about you
finding yourself drawn to inconsistent or emotionally unavailable partners
having difficulty leaving relationships that repeatedly leave you feeling uncertain or deflated
knowing intellectually that a relationship is not meeting your needs, but feeling emotionally unable to let go
doing everything in your power to achieve closeness because at the end of the day you just want to feel loved
Questions anxiously-attached people commonly ask:
Why do I get anxious in relationships?
Why am I anxious only in romantic relationships?
Why can't I relax in my relationship?
Why do I overthink everything in my relationship?
Why do I panic when my partner doesn't text back?
Why do I get anxious when my partner pulls away?
Why do I need constant reassurance from my partner?
Why am I scared my partner will lose interest?
Why do I always think my partner is going to leave me?
Why do I feel insecure even when my relationship is good?
How counselling can help:
Rather than judging yourself for being “too much,” “too sensitive,” or “too attached,” counselling can offer an opportunity to explore the underlying needs, fears, and experiences shaping your relationship patterns. If you are tired of feeling anxious and emotionally exhausted, we can work together to uncover the roots of your relationship anxiety and uncertainty, honour your deep need to feel loved, safe, and seen, cultivate inner calm and emotional ease, and reclaim your confidence and reignite the badass within.
You can develop a more secure relationship with yourself and others, and you don’t have to do it on your own.
